Michael Embaie was born in Eritrea, East Africa. Michael came to Canada as a refugee in 1983. Michael has a bachelor and a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Calgary, and specialized in policy and international social work. Michael also completed a graduate Diploma program in International Law and Protection of Refugees from York University in Toronto.
Michael worked for the Federal Government of Canada as Chief, Documentation Centre, Tribunal Officer and Alternative Conflict Resolution Officer for the Western Canada Region from 1989 to 2013. Michael worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on and off in Southern and East Africa between 1998 to 2007 as head of the Resettlement program and Training Officer. Michael has been teaching at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Social Work and Department of Sociology from January 2001 to present.
Michael has been involved and continue to serve on boards of local, provincial, national and international organizations as an advocate concerning issues and causes that promote peace, human rights, social and economic justice, poverty reduction etc. for about 25 years.Back
