Meet staff member Elizabeth
Dove, Public Engagement
Organizer
|
This profile is
the 3rd in a series to allow volunteers and other
supporters to get to know our staff team better.
Elizabeth's inspiration
for her work comes from relationships with community
leaders and other friends in developing countries: "They
keep their optimism buoyant against all odds - economic
pressures, lack of access to decision makers, the
ongoing political and social impact of colonization -
they are so competent and only need our help to get them
access to the things we take for
granted."

Impending election creates
strategic moment to advocate for increased
aid
|
|
With
a potential election looming, all political parties must
make concrete
commitments to supporting and increasing foreign aid to
ensure that hard-won
gains of the past are not lost. Canada needs to
show leadership by finally
setting a timetable to investing to 0.7% of GNI in aid.
As Canada moves
towards that broader goal, our government must at very
least renew its commitment - due to expire in 2010 -
to
expand our aid budget by at least 8%
annually.

take today to influence the government to renew its
commitment

Contest! Send us your
stories of change
|
|
The undeniable success of
RESULTS Canada lives in the experiences of those who
have seen a change in political will - big or small -
brought about by the power of "everyday heroes" - global
citizens who act on behalf of those living in extreme
poverty. These are moments where both the
political will, and the advocate - through new proof of
his/her power - are changed.
We need to record these
stories of change, both to remind ourselves about our
power to create political will to end extreme poverty,
and to prove it to others.
Send us YOUR
story (or stories) of change - 500 words
max.
- The most powerful stories
will be featured on the new RESULTS Canada website
(launching this Fall)
- The author of the best story
will receive a free ticket to our Saturday, Nov 21st National Conference
Banquet in Ottawa, where they will share their
story with those assembled.
Send your stories to grassroots@results-resultats.ca
by Monday
November 9th to be entered in the
contest

Meet Volunteer Advocate
Francoise Briet
|
|
A
scientist by training, a global citizen in her heart,
volunteering with RESULTS Canada has allowed Francoise
to merge her interests and to develop skills as one of
the co-Facilitators of the Toronto
group.
"RESULTS CANADA helped me to concretize
what has been inside my heart for so many years; like a
flower, my interest in social issues bloomed. I feel now
like a complete different person from the
narrowly-focused scientist I was over the past 10
years."

The lessons of
History
Métro (Montreal), Wednesday,
September 16, 2009
The Moulin à paroles woke up
my pride, thank you ! I have been moved by a very short
text about child mortality in 1918. We have to remember
that a lot of children died at that time here, and that
a lot of children die now elsewhere in the world.
In Africa alone, 1.16 million babies die every
year within the first month of life, and a quarter
million women die during pregnancy. It is estimated that
over 60% of the 9.2 million child deaths each year can
be prevented through 23 well-proven responses, such as
breastfeeding, prevention of mother-to child
transmission of HIV, immunization, micro-nutrients, and
oral rehydration therapy to treat diarrhea.
By
creating the Catalytic Initiative to Save a Million
Lives (CI) in November 2007, Canada took a concrete step
to improve the health of young children and their
mothers. Increased donor funding is one way that this
Catalytic Initiative can have greater reach and access.
Thanks to this Initiative, many more lives can be saved.
Treating the children from elsewhere as equivalent to
the children here allows us to share the real value of
human dignity. (Translated from
French)
