We see a world where citizens actively voice their concerns to their elected officials and thereby choose the poverty-related policies and priorities of their governments. Our Mission To create the political and collective will to end the worst aspects of poverty, and to empower individuals to exercise their personal and political power. Our FocusWe focus on proven solutions to often neglected problems that perpetuate the cycle of poverty around the world. Currently our focus areas include tuberculosis, malaria, primary education, micro-credit, and sanitation.
How We Work Grassroots volunteers from around the country meet at least once a month in their local communities for Education and Action Meetings where they develop their knowledge on global poverty issues, strengthen their advocacy skills and take action. How To Get InvolvedSend an email to grassroots@results-resultats.ca. Meet staff member Sabina Saini
|
This profile is the 2nd in a series to allow volunteers and other supporters to get to know our staff team better.
Years of working on Parliament Hill for MPs and even Cabinet Ministers was excellent training ground for Sabina's work as RESULTS' new Campaigns Manager. And while she is looking forward to taking MPs on more educational delegations to developing countries, it is her love of soccer which is drawing her to South Africa next year...

TAKE ACTION ON ENSURING CIDA KEEPS AN ANTI-POVERTY AGENDA
| | In May, Bev Oda, the Minister responsible for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the bulk of Canada's almost $5 billion aid budget, laid out the final planks of a plan to make our aid more decisive, more focused and more effective. The Minister identified three key thematic priorities for aid: (1) increasing food security; (2) stimulating sustainable economic growth, and (3) securing a future for children and youth. She also emphasized a need to focus on the impact of our aid.
With a narrowed focus on tangible, proven and cost effective interv entions that truly target the world's poorest, our aid can have tremendous impact. But additional resources are not enough. Guarantees must be given that scarce aid dollars will reach those most in need, in particular, the billion people living under $1 a day.
Minister Oda has invited Canadians to send their suggestions on how this new aid effectiveness agenda can have the most impact. Click HERE to read our Action Sheet and items to highlight in your letter to Minister Oda.

Making friends and influencing MPs
|

Relationship building is one key to successful advocacy. That's why, at RESULTS, we put a premium on connecting with decision makers - especially parliamentarians. And, there's no better way to connect than to do so in person. Click HERE for tips on how to start a dialogue on effective solutions to global poverty with your MP. In the last few months our volunteers and our staff have put a real emphasis on meeting with MPs. It was an exceptional effort! In total, RESULTS we have had face to face meetings with close to 30 parliamentarians representing all four political parties. Click HERE to see MPs we have met with recently.

In March 2009, RESULTS Canada staff led a group of 3 Canadian Parliamentarians on a week-long visit to Bangladesh to educate them about poverty and solutions. According to one of the delegates, the trip had a powerful effect: "Spending March break week in Bangladesh on a Canadian educational delegation was mind-bending and life-changing."

Our man in Rome: Canadian Board member represents RESULTS International at NGO G8 meeting
|
|
by Jean-Francois Tardif Article Subheading
I had the honour of representing the international RESULTS family at the recent Civil G8 meeting in Rome. The Civil G8 is a meeting of NGOs from around the world whose purpose is to provide NGO input into the deliberations leading to the G8 Summit. My specific mission as part of the ACTION project (Advocacy To Control TB Internationally) was to make sure the NGOs gave a clear message to the representatives of the 8 leaders (the Sherpas as they are called) shortfall of resources to the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria had to receive priority attention. This proved to be a very complex challenge.

"Microcredit was the issue at the first E&A meeting I attended and even though I was studying economics at the time, I didn't know much about the issue and I thought the stated objectives seemed very idealistic. I wrote my letters despite my cynicism, but to see microcredit gain so much prominence and importance as a tool to eliminate poverty in so little time really impressed me and showed me the power that a relatively small group of people like RESULTS can have. At the beginning talking about microcredit felt a bit esoteric - we seemed to be the only ones who held such a firm belief in it - but slowly people got convinced and now it's become what it is. RESULTS has been a big part of that because back then nobody in the general public knew what microcredit was..."
