Historic RESULTS G8
Win Will Save Thousands of Mothers and
Children
|
|
Hundreds of letters to MPs,
dozens of published letters to the editor, many
meetings with MPs, and one
important meeting with the PM himself
later... RESULTS volunteers and supporters
throughout the country are celebrating
commitments made at the G8 to improve the health
of mothers and young children.
The
initiative has each of the core elements that we
have been pushing for over the past year,
delivered at the community level, with a
commitment to measure
results.
These promised results
include: 1.3 million fewer child deaths, 64,000
fewer maternal deaths; 12 million more couples
will have access to family planning. Canada's
investment of over $1.1 billion dollars in new
money is substantial and one we need to support.
The growing global investment (now at $7.3
billion since the Summit) is something to build
on.

communique.

other coalition members on our shared
reaction.
This recent success was
built on years of hard work by our volunteers to
put children at the forefront of the aid
agenda.
Our work is not
over: we need to ensure this
money finds its way to proven, cost-effective
initiatives.

Microcredit Motion a
Landmark Achievement
|
|
On June 8, 2010,
Liberal Member of Parliament John McCallum
introduced a House of Commons motion calling on
the government to increase their funding to
microfinance institutions that target the very
poor in the least developed countries. This
motion, the first of its kind, received
all-party support, including endorsements from
Minister Bev Oda, Minister Jim Flaherty and the
leaders of all three Opposition parties.
Mr. McCallum attended the
Microcredit Regional Summit in Kenya with
RESULTS Canada in April. This motion is a
great opportunity in our continued work on
microfinance to ensure that CIDA increases its
investments in microfinance overall and
prioritizes microcredit for those living on less
than a $1.25 a day as part of its economic
growth platform |
Tuberculosis
victories!
|
|
In
March 2009 RESULTS Canada helped secure $127
million for TB prevention, diagnostics and
treatment. The total amount approved for
funding in the first round this Spring was
US$18.4 million in 19 countries and recipients
of the funding include RESULTS Action Affiliate
partner AMREF Canada for lifesaving projects in
Uganda.
In
May, after years of strong advocacy by RESULTS
volunteers around the world, the World Bank
approved a new $63 million dollar project to
strengthen a network of TB and public health
laboratories in 4 African countries.
This
June, RESULTS Canada assisted in the
coordination of an all-party HIV/AIDS and TB
(HAT) Parliamentary Caucus dedicated to
developing a better understanding of the needs
of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS or
Tuberculosis globally. The parliamentary caucus
will be co-chaired by Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla,
and Lois Brown from the Conservative Party, who
have both participated in RESULTS Canada
parliamentary delegations to developing
countries. |

RESULTS releases two
groundbreaking report on World Bank's poor TB
and Education performance
|
|
Ar
June 9th, the ACTION
project of RESULTS International released "Aid
Without Impact" - a report on the World Bank
and its sector-wide approach (SWAps) to health
programming. ACTION project's analysis found
that although well-intentioned, SWAps have
failed. 20 SWAps were measured against TB
indicators for the report.
A 2nd
new report by RESULTS "World
Bank Financing for the Education - More or less
for the poor in IDA 16?" finds troubling
trends in World Bank education lending for the
poorest countries - especially in Africa where
its proportion of education financing was less
than 15% in 2009, despite being home to 32
million of the world's 72 million out-of-school
children.
