While led from the bottom up, we conduct our advocacy at a variety of levels, in order to ensure effectiveness. This includes National staff who meet with key decision makers across the country and internationally to put global poverty on the agenda.
Internationally, we’re part of a network of seven RESULTS national organizations that often collaborate on key issues to mobilize an international effort: US, UK, Australia, Japan, Germany, Mexico. We are also a part of a number of national and international coalitions and networks working on global poverty issues.
Our work with grassroots advocates is premised on education and action. We believe that for change to occur and citizens to become mobilized, they need to be sufficiently educated and inspired about a particular issue and this education must be directed towards concrete and effective action.
We focus on a specific global poverty issue each month to ensure that our combined efforts have a significant collective impact. Our monthly ‘Action Sheets’ describe how a pressing poverty issue is affecting people in the developing world, the political climate surrounding the issue, a realistic and tangible request of the government and concludes with a number of proposed actions for RESULTS volunteers to undertake.
RESULTS Canada volunteers and staff come together on a conference calls regularly to plan for the month’s campaigns and get up to date of our progress with news from across the country. Expert guest speakers are featured who help to bring our issues to life.
RESULTS Canada groups hold Education and Action meetings every month in their local communities to learn about the issues, practice effective communication and take action. Often, expert guest speakers are invited to speak and videos are shown at these meetings.
Through letters and face-to-face meetings, we urge government officials and MPs to implement policies and to fund those programs that most improve the lives of the poorest.
We write guest articles and letters to the editor, work with editorial writers and are interviewed on radio and television. Any given month, RESULTS volunteer generate an average of 50 letters - opinion editorials or letters-to-the-editor - in newspapers across the country.
We create partnerships with other organizations and work to increase awareness and action by speaking at schools, churches and public events.
We raise funds to support RESULTS Canada's efforts to leverage even larger sums for initiatives that improve the lives of the poorest.
